This morning I found myself thinking about cheese—probably because I recently read a post on our sister blog, The Editor Is In, which was all about this delectable dairy staple. I started to think about my favorite foods that put the spotlight on cheese—grilled cheese, pizza; the list goes on and on. But, let me not forget the cheesiest delight of them all, the oh-so-comforting macaroni and cheese. If you are a fan of this hearty dish, check out S’MAC (aka Sarita’s Macaroni & Cheese) in the East Village. Not long after I moved to NYC, I was obsessed with all of the restaurants that specialize in one dish. I mean, if you only do one thing, you have to do it well, right? So S’MAC was definitely on my list of places to try—and I wasn’t disappointed. The restaurant is washed in orange and yellow hues, which makes you think about cheese right from the start. Of course this eatery offers the good old-fashioned version, but also check out one of the several interesting combinations (think La Mancha, Manchego cheese with fresh fennel and onions; or Mediterranean, goat cheese, sautéed spinach, kalamata olives and roasted garlic). I recommend the Buffalo Chicken (cheddar and American cheese with boneless chicken pieces, buffalo wing sauce and crumbled blue cheese). If you’re feeling creative, you can also build your own mac and cheese dish. And, the restaurant has a kiosk in First Park. I mean, who said mac & cheese isn't acceptable for a picnic?
