National Hot Buttered Rum Day is January 17

There seems to be a day devoted to everything. Cupcakes? Of course! Burgers? Why not! This Saturday, January 17, rum gets its day in the sun on National Hot Buttered Rum Day. In celebration, folks can cozy up with a cup of Maple-Spiced Hot-Buttered Rum—created by Aviram Turgeman, the Tour de France Restaurant Group beverage director—at Nice Matin and Marseille. Or, those adventurous types can try their hand at creating the beverage at home. Here’s how:

Ingredients:
1oz Spiced Maple Butter*
5oz Organic Apple cider
2oz Bacardi 8 Year Rum

Directions:

1.) Mix butter and cider in a saucepan and bring to a boil
            2.) Turn heat off and add the rum
            3.) Stir thoroughly
            4.) Pour into an Irish coffee mug or another heat resistant cup
            5.) Finish with an orange twist and discard
            6.) Garnish with a star anise float

*Maple Spiced Butter Recipe Directions:

1.) Cut 2 sticks of butter to 1" cubes and let warm to room temperature

2.) Add 1 cup grade A Maple Syrup, 1/2 cup demerara sugar, 2.5 teaspoons of ground dried ginger, 2.5 teaspoons of ground mace, 0.5 teaspoon of ground cinnamon, 2 pinches kosher salt

3.) Whip gently to create a consistent mixture

4.) Place in refrigerator for 20 minutes to get a harder consistency

5.) Roll into a sheet of parchment paper and create a long about 1.5" thick roll

6.) Keep in freezer and dose per drink
