Last weekend, I spent a morning exploring The Bronx’s Wave Hill, a large public garden tucked into the hill between its neighborhood of Riverdale and the Hudson River. Wave Hill’s front lawn is a great spot to relax in an Adirondack chair and enjoy the views of the river, New Jersey’s Palisades and the George Washington Bridge. For Mother’s Day, the garden’s catering partner Great Performances will host a brunch inside the Wave Hill House’s Armor Hall. Great Performances’ founder and CEO Liz Neumark answered a few of my questions about the upcoming brunch and her company’s partnership with the garden.

Q: Can you tell me about Great Performances’ partnership with Wave Hill? How long have you been partners? What drew you to Wave Hill—or did they come to you?

A: Great Performances is the exclusive caterer for Wave Hill meaning that we oversee all of the events that take place on property including weddings and conferences - since 1992.  Wave Hill was our first cultural institution exclusive contract and we are extremely proud of our two-decade affiliation. We operate the Café at Wave Hill, which serves a delicious selection of freshly made seasonal menu items and snacks from our Just Sprouted line.  We also offer a daily Afternoon Tea – a perfect leisurely experience in a delightful setting.

Q: The Mother’s Day brunch menu looks delicious. What are some of your favorite dishes? Are any of these also found in your cookbook, Sylvia's Table?

A: I’m always drawn to dishes that can be refreshed depending on the season. Options like the Scrambled Eggs or the Granola are always favorites because there are so many ways to play with the ingredients. From Sylvia’s Table specifically, we included the Meringue Kisses recipe as it’s become one of my specialties – my friends are always asking me to bring a batch for birthdays and celebrations and I thought they’d make the perfect treat for Mother’s Day.

Many of the other dishes on the menu were created specifically for the brunch with the season’s produce in mind, but Sylvia’s Table does offer some delicious variations on many of these dishes including the eggs, fruit salad, salmon dishes and much more.

Q: Will all or some of the food for the event come from Katchkie Farm? If not, where else will it come from?

A: We make a strong effort to utilize Katchkie Farm produce as much as possible in our cooking; however, due to the sheer volume of venues that we work with, we do have to bring ingredients from other farms as well. Of course, we’re still dedicated to using only the freshest and most sustainably grown ingredients available and are fortunate to work with a number of fantastic local farms to supplement our Katchkie produce.  We reach out to local artisanal producers for cheeses, meats, yogurt and other year-round products.

Q: As you mentioned, Great Performances operates the café at Wave Hill – is that where the brunch will be held or will it be in a different room?

A: Brunch will be held the Armor Hall, which is a beautiful Romanesque–style hall in the Wave Hill House. Armor Hall received its name because a former resident of Wave Hill was a museum curator and used the space to display his collection of armor. The space has ceiling-high windows overlooking the grounds, Hudson River, and Palisades. One beautiful feature of the room is the vaulted ceiling, which is made of salvaged timber from construction of the Lexington Avenue subway. In summer 2013, Wave Hill House re-opened after a renovation period and we’re happy to host our Mother’s Day Brunch in such a breathtaking setting!
