John’s to the Rescue

John’s to the Rescue

The pizza that saved my night out on W. 44th St.

Apologies to Kevin Kline: Throughout Tuesday’s performance of “Present Laughter,” when you and your fellow actors onstage at the St. James Theatre were working so hard to make a soufflé of Noël Coward’s leaden comedy, I kept thinking about what I was going to eat once the curtain fell. Two and a half long hours later. Since John’s is next door to the St. James, pizza it would be. But what toppings? Mushrooms, sausage, pepperoni and black olives, of course. And a pint of Guinness to wash down the whole glorious pie (no slices at John’s) and a Caesar salad. Truth is, I prefer my ham on a thin-crust pizza.
