Irish Spirits at The Penny Farthing

Irish Spirits at The Penny Farthing

A few weeks ago, I visited the popular East Village hangout The Penny Farthing, a spacious restaurant and bar, which hugs the corner of Third Avenue and E. 13th Street. Inside, the venue’s laidback ambiance is enhanced by rustic features, including exposed brick walls, long wooden tables and several large wheels—a shout out to the restaurant’s namesake, the penny-farthing, a type of bicycle with a large front wheel and a smaller rear wheel. Although the establishment seems perfectly at home in its bustling downtown Manhattan ‘hood, given its provincial charm I could easily see the spot as a popular haunt in the rolling hills of Ireland. So, it was fitting that I visited the space to check out the offerings from Tullamore D.E.W., a brand of Irish whiskey. I tried a few of the brand’s labels—each sampling included a lively Irish toast—while enjoying comfort food of the grilled cheese and sliders variety. I definitely plan to replace my standard order, a Jameson neat, with a Tullamore concoction. I also can’t wait to head back to The Penny Farthing for happy hour and a few more nibbles of some hearty comfort food. For more on the restaurant, click here.
