Four & Twenty Blackbirds Pie at the Library

Four & Twenty Blackbirds Pie at the Library

I’ve been meaning to check out one of Brooklyn’s most popular pie shops Four & Twenty Blackbirds for a while now. Recently, they opened an outpost at the Brooklyn Public Library and I knew I had to go. A combination of two of my favorite things—food and books—was worth the trip to Brooklyn. Although I’m still hoping to try a fruit-based pie from Four & Twenty at some point, I ended up ordering a savory hand pie when I visited because it was lunchtime.

I chose a kale pie from their two daily-changing options: one vegetarian, the other a meat-based pie. Though I was initially disappointed at the idea of just kale in a pie, I was pleasantly surprised at the various flavors seasoning the kale and the piecrust. The texture of the crust was what really made the pie: crunchy on the outside, but light and flakey inside like a croissant.

Grab a book, order a pie and spend a quiet afternoon at one of the tables inside surrounding the café or outside the library, with umbrellas to keep the sun at bay. Four & Twenty offers outposts at a few other cafes around the city, plus their original pie shop in Gowanus. Visit birdsblack.com for more information.
