Brooklyn Finally Gets Dinosaur Bar-B-Que!

Not even a year old and Dinosaur-Bar-B-Que’s Brooklyn location is already a staple of its Gowanus neighborhood. Case in point: I visited on a random Monday afternoon and the sprawling space was pretty packed—a scene you’re more likely to encounter on any given Friday or Saturday night at the city’s other eateries. As you’d probably expect, the barbecue joint’s much-buzzed-about other locations (“The Dino” boasts spots in New York’s Harlem, Syracuse, Rochester, Troy and Buffalo; as well as outposts in Newark, New Jersey and Stamford, Connecticut) already gave this Brooklyn newbie an edge over its competitors.

The large space, built in 1941 to house a motor freight company and later a tool and die company, is teeming with cool memorabilia—from large colorful posters and black-and-white photographs to the pièce de résistance, local artist Brandon d’Leo’s 14-by-8 foot mobile installation, which features 116 antique whiskey bottles (dating back to the end of Prohibition) sandblasted by hand to give off a rustic, frosted appearance. The spot will celebrates its one-year mark in June, and as cool as the interiors are, the food is definitely the reason to visit. I sampled the creamy Deviled Eggs, succulent Honey BBQ wings, flavorful sliders (think Brisket with pickled onion & jalapeno relish and Cheeseburger with crispy matchstick tortillas) and the ever-popular, fall-of-the-bone St. Louis Style Ribs. I can’t wait to go back and try the Fried Green Tomatoes and “Big Ass” Pork Plate. I topped it all off with a creative pink cocktail dubbed the Donkey Punch, which my server described as a drink with “a whole lot of rum,” but had a deceptively fruity flavor—like a SweeTart. Satiate your hunger with a quick jaunt to Brooklyn, this place is definitely worth the short train ride—just ask any of the hungry prospective diners lined up waiting to get in when I left.
