I love to travel. In my life, I can check trips to France, Brussels, Italy, Spain, Germany, England and the Netherlands off my bucket list. Although it has been a few years since I’ve racked up the frequent flier miles, a few weeks ago I felt as if I’d been transported back to the European countryside when I entered Ballaró Caffé Prosciutteria in the East Village. My stop at this cozy, Sicilian eatery was a fluke; I was killing time with a friend before seeing an off off-Broadway play nearby. However, we liked the place so much we came back after the show. Numerous bottles of wine rest on shelves along the exposed brick walls of this dimly lit space and the all-European staff engage patrons sitting at the long, wooden bar. I enjoyed a complex glass of red wine and a panini with salad, which was just enough food to feel nourished without being stuffed. This is the place to go for a quiet evening with friends or a romantic outing. Can’t get to Europe anytime soon? This is your next best option.
