Today marks the start of the 2014 US Open, which continues through September 8th. If you’re heading to Queens for the tournament, I recommend a stop at Court 17 where the Morris Grilled Cheese Truck will be parked for the next two weeks. There are also plenty of other food options in the Open’s Food Village, from ice cream at Ben & Jerry’s to barbecue from Hill Country to a few newcomers like Pat La Frieda Meat Purveyors.

Staying in Manhattan during the games? Don’t worry: Madison Square Park has you covered. A few years ago around this time, I was wandering through the park on my lunch break and noticed at least a hundred people crowded around a big screen, watching a tennis match intently. Though I’ve never really followed the sport myself, I end up watch plenty of baseball and football games at bars since I don’t have cable TV. So I can appreciate that Madison Square Park provides a free, public and family-friendly spot to watch a sporting event.

Remember: the first matches begin at 11 a.m. today and the schedule is available at usopen.org.
