Wrapping up the Park Avenue Armory’s 2012 season is Ann Hamilton’s solo exhibit the event of a thread, which closes this Sunday, January 6th. I heard about the show over the holidays and when I found out it was closing this weekend, I rushed out to see the huge installation and test out one or two of the 40 swings suspended from the ceiling of the Armory’s 55,000-square-foot space. I knew the show would be awe-inspiring as I’d been in the Armory a few years ago for an indoor carnival, complete with Ferris wheel, stilt-walkers and a huge slide. I was not wrong; the swings were an amazing sight. Each one was tethered to a central row of silky curtains and as visitors moved forward and back, the curtains lifted and fell. The ropes also made a violin sound when they moved creating the feeling of an orchestra practice. See the show this weekend before it’s too late, or for the Armory’s 2013 programming—which has yet to be announced—check their website: armoryonpark.org.
