Sifting Through the Wreckage
Sifting Through the Wreckage

Earlier this week, I headed to Discovery Times Square to check out one of the exhibition center’s current exhibits, Odyssey’sSHIPWRECK! Pirates & Treasure The Exhibition. My fascination with shipwrecks began in 1997—the year the blockbuster flick Titanic was released. While every other 13-year-old girl was listening to Céline Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On” on repeat or swooning over Leonardo DiCaprio, I was fascinated by all of the Discovery Channel documentaries dedicated to exploring the real RMS Titanic and other underwater wreckage sites. So, I jumped at the opportunity to see SHIPWRECK!The sprawling exhibit space is set up to look like a ship—complete with curved, wooden beams to resemble a ship’s deck. The interactive exhibit begins with a brief video showcasing Odyssey Marine Exploration, Inc.’s—a company engaged in the salvage of deep-water shipwrecks—process of exploring shipwrecks. After the video, visitors are free to explore the many displays. The exhibit includes maps pinpointingfamous shipwrecks; facts about famous pirates and different types of pirate ships; and interactive displays, including the chance to create intricate rope knots, make your own pirate avatar and even a large container where you can experience a level one hurricane, minus rain, complete with 78mph winds. Of course, the exhibit is full of artifacts—from kitchenware, toys, glass bottles and more from the SS Republic shipwreck, to a number of silver coins from the Tortugas wreck and more. Future deep-sea explorers can even view several displays of Odyssey’s equipment. For more information, click here
