Last week, I got the chance to tour the New York Harbor aboard the Zephyr as part of New York Water Taxi’s Hidden Harbor Tours. The latest series of tours, called Beyond Sandy, explore the areas surrounding the Harbor that were affected by Hurricane Sandy. During the tour, a number of speakers discussed possible solutions to the hurricane’s destruction and prevention methods for future storms. We visited areas devastated by Sandy—like Red Hook, Staten Island and Hoboken—as well as the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge (pictured), where a sea gate is proposed to protect the Harbor from potential storms. Other tours focus on different areas like the East River and Newark Bay. For more information or tickets, visit nywatertaxi.com/tours/hidden-harbors.
