Brooklyn Bolts Bring Football to Coney Island

This past Friday, I spent a chilly evening at the beach watching football. The Brooklyn Bolts, one of four teams that make up the FXFL (Fall Experimental Football League), began their mini-season last month and played a home game Friday against the Florida Blacktips. Their home also happens to be the same Coney Island stadium where Brooklyn’s minor league baseball team, the Brooklyn Cyclones, plays during the summer.

Getting off the subway in Coney Island, my boyfriend and I stopped at Nathan’s for dinner—one of the few Boardwalk-side options open in the off-season—where we noticed many enthusiastic football fans grabbing a bite before the game. After a couple hot dogs, we headed to MCU Park, a few blocks away. We shivered in our seats with hot cocoa as the Bolts maintained their season-long winning streak with a 26-13 score.

Like with minor league baseball, many of the players in the FXFL have pro or college experience, while others are striving for the majors. Either way, you’re guaranteed an interesting game without the exorbitant ticket prices. Visit fxfl.com/bolts for more information.
