Zarin Fabrics, A One-Stop Shop for All of Your Home Goods Needs

Zarin Fabrics, A One-Stop Shop for All of Your Home Goods Needs

For 80 years, the family owned Zarin Fabrics has been a staple of the Lower East Side. Three generations later, DIYers, home décor enthusiasts and just about everyone else in between can still shop for a bounty of rich fabrics (and more) in the three-floor space.

I recently took a tour of the store, having visited for the first time a few years ago, and, as I expected, the second floor is still teeming with rows upon rows of fancy, yet affordable, fabric. The layout is pretty easy to navigate, with fabrics organized by color and type—from wools and microfibers to faux leather and velvet. While walking the aisles, I was drawn to deep red fabrics with intricate golden-hued floral designs—perfect for any holiday decorating projects. Although any of the store’s many fabrics work for upholstering furniture or executing the perfect window treatment (both services Zarin Fabrics can do in-house or at your house), storeowner David Zarin tells me that customers use his merchandise for all sorts of things, including handbag and shoe designs.

When you visit the store, you might even bump elbows with a celeb, as several famous faces—from legendary basketball stars to popular singers—frequent the space for all of their fabric needs.

Remember when I mentioned DIY projects earlier? If you want to take on a project yourself, head to the basement, where the store carries all the tools needed to upholster furniture, make pillows and more. The basement also boasts a clearance section, with fabric up to 90% off.

As I mentioned, it had been a few years since I first visited the store, so on my trip last week I was able to check out Zarin Fabrics’ newest offering: a sleek ground-floor showroom. Almost two years old, Zarin decided to add the showroom for a pretty simple reason—there really aren’t any in that part of town. With the showroom, Zarin and his team wanted to embrace the Lower East Side’s new image (think luxe condos, upscale boutiques and quaint eateries), and the new space accomplishes just that.

The design of the slate-hued room, complete with neutral accents, is the brainchild of Zarin Fabrics’ manager of merchandising and private label, Amber Falk. She created the space with form and function in mind, resulting in a chic, yet cozy, environment. All items in the carefully curated room are for sale—from the cream-hued maison sofa to the framed wall art to the pillows with handcrafted skull designs and more. The store works exclusively with several vendors and artisans, so you are sure to find something one-of-a-kind. (FYI: Everything in the showroom is 20% off thru November 21.) If you’ve got a few ideas of how to spruce up your home but want a bit of help from the pros, Amber will come to your place for a design consultation.

There’s no need to travel all over town for your home goods needs, just head to Zarin Fabrics—this one-stop shop is well worth the visit.
