Saks Fifth Avenue OFF 5TH & Gilt Join Forces

I wouldn’t call myself a fashionista by any stretch of the imagination, but I do appreciate high-quality apparel and accessories. Growing up in Ohio, I would often take weekend trips with my family to Aurora Farms—a luxury outlet mall, located about an hour east of my home in Akron. I remember my mom and dad shopping the racks at Saks Fifth Avenue OFF 5TH. And, when I got a bit older, it was my go-to place for a new school wardrobe.

A few years later, with the boom in Internet shopping, most of my purchases were done on the wonderful web, with Gilt—the online shopping website for luxury goods—as my No. 1 destination to find accessories (most of my jewelry collection is from the site) and apparel for special occasions.

Now, my childhood shopping excursions and adulthood purchasing habits have merged into one: a brand new store in Midtown Manhattan. Saks Fifth Avenue OFF 5TH opened its NYC flagship this past week, and the new store features the first-ever Gilt in-store shop.

I got a chance to check out the new shopping destination yesterday and was impressed with the size of the place—a two-level shopping mecca, which is housed in the former Daffy’s location on E. 57th St. The store is a one-stop shop for fashionistas and dapper gents to find women’s and men’s apparel, accessories, shoes, fine jewelry, vintage handbags and luggage at up to 70% off.

The store is easy to navigate, with large signs pointing out the different departments. While perusing the merchandise, I saw vibrant Betsey Johnson handbags, beautiful baubles from the likes of Nadri and Majorica, breathable knits from Eileen Fisher, stylish separates from Theory, and a wide array of men’s apparel and accessories (think durable totes from Hugo Boss, classy backpacks and rich leather belts by Cole Haan, and plenty of suits and casual wear by an extensive collection of designers).

The Gilt portion of the sprawling space is the first thing shoppers see when they descend the elevator from the street-level entrance. The space is laid out with the merchandise of a specific designer displayed on the left-hand side of the area (apparel by Zadig and Voltaire was featured when I visited, including light crème knit tops and flowy blouses). FYI: The featured designer changes every Wednesday and today beachwear by Shoshanna is now gracing the space.

To the right, an eclectic mix of items from various designers is on display. The selections for purchase when I visited took on a Paris Fashion Week theme, with quirky fox fur jackets in powder pink hues by Pure Navy, leather vests by Veda in creamy caramel, and more. Today, right-hand side selections will take on a summery theme to complement Shoshanna merchandise.

The Gilt shop also boasts a weekly in-store flash sale and a video wall that showcases a calendar of upcoming sales. Seeing as the shop just opened, stay tuned for more things to come, including items for men, as well as home goods. This spring, the space will expand and feature “Gilt by Appointment,” a luxe personal shopping experience.
