5 Hot Spots for Shopping in 2016

This year I got a chance to visit new retail locations in the city, as well as experience established stores for the very first time. Here are five of my favorite shopping adventures from 2016.

Brookfield Place (Battery Park City): I’m from the Midwest, so I’m used to shopping malls. Brookfield Place, though, is a luxury shopping destination. With upscale retail venues like Burberry, Hermès, Saks Fifth Avenue and J. Crew, among many others, all in one spot, Brookfield Place has shops to meet anyone’s needs. There are also art installations, an ice-skating rink during the winter months, as well as a year-round, authentic French marketplace called Le District. There, guests can find fine dining establishments and areas to buy great wines, meats, cheeses, bread and more. C’est chic!

A Second Chance (Upper East Side and SoHo): This family-owned luxury consignment and resale establishment is the best place to find new and gently used Chanel, Hermès and Louis Vuitton items without breaking the bank. From classic handbags and brightly colored scarves to chunky jewelry and elegant shoes, you can find all sorts of treasures for yourself and loved ones at A Second Chance.

Sony Square NYC (Flatiron District): This hands-on store allows visitors to experience Sony’s latest products for the home with the help of knowledgeable staff members who are well versed in all-things Sony. My favorite feature of the PlayStation® VR WORLDS area. Guests can don the PlayStation Virtual Reality Headset for PS4 and immediately be immersed in another world. I tried the underwater adventure simulation and giggled with glee as I watched manta rays and cute sea turtle swim around me in this 360° experience. I’m scared of sharks in real life, and was well aware that the shark ramming itself into the virtual cage I was “in” was fake, but it still was scary. Scary and fun. I was proud of myself for not screaming.

Hammacher Schlemmer (Midtown East): The first thing I saw when I walked into this magical store was a life-size orca hanging from the ceiling. It turned out to be a two-person submarine! I took my time walking around the store, marveling at the products that I never knew I needed or wanted. This American catalog was founded in 1848 and sells fantastical, yet functional, gifts. From full-sized arcade unit to gadgets perfect for world travelers (electronics adapters, smartphone backup batteries and more), to children’s toys and self-weighing suitcases, Hammacher Schlemmer has something for everyone.

The Shop at NBC Studios (Midtown): This sleek new space combines NBC’s must-have apparel and accessories once featured in the NBC Experience store and has fun photo-op moments—like a chair from “The Voice” that you can sit on for a great Instagram pic, as well as a “Today” desk you can sit behind to pretend like you’re the newest host for this popular program that has been on the air for over 60 years. Find items from your favorite NBC shows like “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” “Late Night with Seth Meyers,” “Saturday Night Live” and more.
