Taco Tuesday is one of my favorite food “holidays.” Especially during the winter months when I long for some Vitamin D and beach clothes. I was so excited to be invited to the opening ZenTaco, an Asian and Latin fusion joint with dishes that can be customized making for countless combinations. The 80-seat Upper West Side restaurant provides the ability to grab and go, or have a seated casual dining experience for lunch or dinner daily. The borough has so many eclectic restaurants, I think ZenTaco found a great neighborhood to call home.

I got to experience some of the highlights of ZenTaco’s menu including the guacamole which includes the option of add-ins like bacon, pumpkin seeds and roasted pineapple; I enjoyed the variety of tacos and bowls on the menu that are also customizable. The creative drink menu has a wide variety of alcoholic popsicle cocktails which including a Bloody Mary with an Avocado Tortilla Popsicle dipped in it. The atmosphere is relaxed—a place where you wanna peel off your winter layers and kick back.

I think my favorite Zen Taco feature is the falling off the bone tender ribs, the fried wontons, the steamed dumplings that were full of flavor, and the fried rice with shrimp served in a little takeout box that was cute.

Here’s a little about the chef: Chef Rene Garcia heads up the kitchen at ZenTaco. Growing up in a Cuban family, the Havana native creates boldly flavored and deeply satisfying ethnic dishes. Some of Garcia’s earliest culinary experiences were cooking from the kitchen of his grandmother's home with his Food Network star brother, Alex Garcia.  From that point on, he traveled throughout Latin America to learn about the different regions and styles of cooking.  Even though Chef Garcia has attended formal cooking schools, he attributes most of his talents in the kitchen to his experience in the Mexican homes of Oaxaca.

ZenTaco is an oasis in the middle of this crazy winter weather and totally worth a short trip on uptown. I’ll definitely be back for more of those popsicle cocktails!
