Midtown's Nerai Breathes New Life into its Elegant Greek Menu

When I think of Greek cuisine, I remember my time in Mykonos when my 20-something metabolism consumed platters of spanakopita, grilled octopus from that morning’s catch delicious greens covered in my favorite flavor bomb, feta cheese and Ouzo, lots and lots of Ouzo. It wasn’t until my dinner at Nerai last week that I felt transported back to that memorable summer. I was invited to the chic restaurant for a 7-course dinner with wine pairings to celebrate its new Executive Chef, Moshe Grundman.

The elegant, seafood-focused Midtown spot boasts a thriving, contemporary take on both Greek cuisine and the tradition of warm hospitality. Chef Grundman, combines classical Hellenic food preparation methods with Mediterranean flourishes to create a luxurious dining experience. During the tasting, I got the opportunity to try a spectrum of delicious flavors including a fall-apart-tender beef cheek, a perfect-cooked lamb loin, and a halibut placed in a fragrant saffron broth that I wanted to bottle and sprinkle on everything like holy water.

Every course was perfectly paired with Greek wines, a wine region I’m the not very familiar with and varietals I can’t pronounce. Thank God Michael Coll, the sommelier, was super informative, passionate and there to answer any questions I had (and I had plenty.) Michael explained that Nerai’s curated and extensive wine list highlights both well-known wines and producers, as well as small Greek producers making fine wine from varietals that go back thousands of years.

Nerai brings the best of Greek tradition by sourcing the freshest possible seafood, then honoring and elevating them in preparation and execution, making dishes you will remember long after your meal. So while you’re exploring Midtown, make a reservation at Nerai and savor the newest additions to the menu and don’t be afraid to try the incredible wines as well. You won’t regret it.
