Spend Your Weekend on the Water

Enjoying a beer aboard Manhattan by Sail’s Clipper City.

Looking for weekend plans to match the summer-y weather? Hop aboard a boat for a relaxing sail around Manhattan, an upscale dinner cruise or a more educational floating tour. Here are my suggestions:

Support the South Street Seaport Museum with a ride on their historic schooner Pioneer. The crew is made up of volunteers and passengers also get the chance to help out by raising the sails. Departing from the South Street Seaport, the Pioneer offers a peaceful ride around the New York Harbor. Email pioneer@seany.org for more information.

What could make a relaxing sail even better? A selection of craft beer from a local brewery! Last summer, I tried some brews by Brooklyn-based KelSo Beer Company aboard Manhattan by Sail’s Clipper City. Their next craft beer sail is this Saturday, with more dates available this season.

Last spring, I cruised around the New York Harbor with New York Water Taxi’s Hidden Harbor Tours and learned about a few areas of the boroughs affected by Hurricane Sandy. Though these particular tours are no longer available, you can still enjoy an educational float with their birdwatching-themed Audubon Summer EcoCruise

For a more upscale experience, book a lunch, brunch or dinner cruise with World Yacht. More like a multi-level floating restaurant, World Yacht’s The Dutchess is equipped with sleek furniture and an impressive crew expertly balancing drinks and hors d’oeuvres. Looking ahead, you can now book a spot on the Fourth of July Fireworks Cruise, which offers a five-course meal, open bar and great views of the fireworks.
